Bio and overview of Fly Fishing Presentations

I’m 67 years old and have resided in Derby, CT all my life.   I began spin fishing and fly fishing at a very early age, all thanks to an uncle who took all the family kids fishing on his one day off a week.  In 1980 my fishing focus turned exclusively to fly fishing.  In 1985 I made my first foray into salt water fly fishing.   I live a stones throw from the Housatonic River and Naugatuck Rivers.   I’m a member of virtually every fly fishing club and organization in CT.  I’m also very much involved in numerous environmentally based organizations such as Trout Unlimited, Connecticut Audubon Society, and the Coastal Conservation Association.  I’ve made numerous written contributions to newspapers, local club newsletters, and periodicals.  My “home” club/organization is the Housatonic Fly Fisherman’s Association.  For the past 36 years I’ve written “Fly of the Month” section of the HFFA news letter and website.  Also for a host of other Fly Fishing organizations in CTG.  I contributed to a book entitled “Over-Winter Striper Secrets” by Captain Al Anderson.   The contributions included photographs and writings which were incorporated in the section on fishing the Housatonic.  My ‘closer crab” pattern appeared in the 2012 Winter edition Fly Tyer Magazine.   I’ve also organized numerous small fly fishing expo’s here in CT.  I’m a member of the Derby Inland Wetlands Commission and, prior to retiring,  was employed by the Town of Orange as the Zoning Administrator for 40 years.

Presentations

Fly Fishing for Stripers on the Housatonic

The Housatonic is a very unique and beautiful river.   Where else can you catch trophy trout at the foot of the Berkshires and then travel an hour south to the river mouth at Stratford/Milford and catch striped bass all in the same day.  The slide show covers fishing locations on the “lower” Hous from the Ousatonic Dam in Derby to the ocean.  It’s one of the premiere salt water fly fishing destinations on the east coast.  It’s also one of a handful of locations which host winter-over striped bass.  I’ll cover river access points, fishing gear, flies/bait fish imitations, fishing techniques, and an array of photos of successful fishermen.  At each presentation I will have a limited number of  “A Guide to Stripers n the Housatonic”.

 Fly Fishing Cape Cod

Just as fly fishing is a passion for me, so is Cape Cod.   I’ve been visiting and fishing Cape Cod for the Past 30 years, from Sandwich to Race Point in P Town.  Many have called it the best Striped Bass fishery in the world.   It’s more than that.  Beautiful beaches and sites abound.  The program features, fly fishing locations, fly patterns, tourist “must sees”, restaurants, and places and towns to stay.   The Cape is one of the most reasonable fly fishing destinations in New England, especially in the recommended “off season”.  Come on a great journey of good friends, good times, and great fishing.  At each presentation I will have a limited number of copies of “A Guide to Fly Fishing the Cape”.

The Six Stages of Fly Fishing – A Life’s Experience

“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after”.

By far this is my favorite presentation.  This is a very different program.  Instead of a program on catching more fish, or a fly fishing destination, the primary focus is on the fly fisherman.   What is it that drives us to be so passionate about the ‘Quiet Sport’?   “Who are we?” This program examines the various ‘stages’ in a fly fishers life, including the initial ‘discovery’ of the sport, the need to learn and educate ourselves more about it, it’s addictive powers, the friendships it has helped us form, the spirituality it has given us, and how it has provided us with a better understanding about where we fit in the world and universe.

 Winter Fly Fishing

This program covers the preparation needed for Winter Fly Fishing.  It includes wearing the proper apparel, the needed gear, what flies to use, and the techniques needed to be successful in the winter.  Learn how the behavior of trout changes in the winter and how your missing out on some rewarding fishing during the winter months.

Fly Fishing for Small Mouth Bass on the Housatonic

This is an under appreciated fishery.  Learn about the behavior of ‘smallies’ and how it can assist you in catching this great game fish.  Many believe that pound for pound this is the strongest fresh water game fish available.  I’ll cover fishing tactics and techniques, best times to fish for small mouth bass, and the flies to use.  Fishing for this species is just a whole ‘lota’ fun and can assist you in improving your fly fishing skills and knowledge of the Housatonic River.
